BOARD OF DIRECTORS
SR. TERRI HOFFMAN
Sister Terri Hoffman is the Prioress of Mother of God Monastery. Sister Terri joined the monastic community in 2008 and has been blessed with many opportunities and the encouragement to grow, and to develop talents and gifts previously hidden. As Prioress her primary role is managing the care and wellbeing of the Sisters as well as overseeing the day to day operations of the Monastery.
SR. BARB YOUNGER
Sister Barb Younger is one of two Assistant Prioresses for Mother of God Monastery. Sister Barb wears "a lot of hats" as the youngest member of the community and enjoys using her many gifts to further the sisters' mission and vision for the overall Harmony Hill Project. She serves as the current Chair of The Village Board of Directors.
SR. EILEEN BRICK
Sister Eileen Brick has been a Benedictine Sister of Mother of God Monastery for over 40 years. Her ministry has included education, initial religious formation, and spiritual direction. She is currently serving on the Monastery Council/Board of Directors and The Village of Harmony Hill Board of Directors.
MICHAEL KLATT
Michael Klatt spent nearly 35 years leading a nonprofit provider of senior care and services, programs for persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities and veterans in a multi-state organization. He also served two terms on the Minnesota Board on Aging as an appointee of Governor Tim Pawlenty. A native of the Watertown, SD area, he returned to his home state in 2020. Michael serves as a trust manager for a family office in South Dakota. He also works with churches and religious communities on stewarding real estate assets and bringing ministry solutions to churches and their ministry objectives. Michael is active in several nonprofit boards in the Watertown area and owns his own consulting and executive leadership and development company.
JOY NELSON
Joy Nelson is a life-long resident of the Watertown community and successful real estate developer. She has been instrumental in the growth of the Watertown area and many quality-of-life initiatives throughout South Dakota. Joy also has a deep passion for horses and helping youth and adults, which she does through a variety of specialized programs and services offered at Joy Ranch. She also serves on various boards within the community and has received numerous honors and recognitions for her “can do” attitude and commitment to supporting others.
MIKE CARTNEY
Michael Cartney is a retired Air Force Colonel and President Emeritus from Lake Area Technical College. He is a graduate of the USAFA, holds a Masters of Science from Purdue University, attended the International Command and Staff College in Canada, graduated from the Air War College, and was a national Fellow to Harvard University. In 2007, following retirement from his 30-year Air Force career, Mike joined LATC as President of the College. Under his leadership, Lake Area Tech won the Aspen Prize for Community College Excellence as the top 2-year College in the nation, and was the 93rd College in US history to have a sitting US President give their Commencement Address. Mike has testified before the US Senate, and was featured in Time magazine twice. Inducted into the SD Hall of Fame for his impact on higher education, Mike was named one of 2022's Top Ten Inspiring Leaders by Industry Era Magazine.
HUGH BARTELS
Hugh Bartels is a four-term District 5 House Representative. He currently serves as South Dakota Speaker of the House and is Chair of the Executive Board of Legislature.and House Retirement Laws. He is also on the State Affairs Committees. As a retired bank president, Hugh has been highly engaged in the Watertown community over the years through his service on the school board, Chamber of Commerce, Kiwanis and with his church. This commitment continues with his current roles on the Board of Directors of Reliabank Dakota, Joy Ranch of South Dakota Watertown Transit, and The Village of Harmony Hill.
JAN DEBERG
Jan DeBerg served as the Watertown Area Community Foundation executive director for more than 20 years, well-known for her work as a leader and volunteer in the community. Her involvement included working with donors, facilitating community visioning processes and helping with the strategic planning of many local organizations. Jan sees the Village project as one with thoughtful and caring insight into community needs and priorities.
MIKE WALSH
With over 25 years of working with the Benedictine Sisters, Michael Walsh is very excited to be on the Harmony Hill Board and looks forward to being part of this great project. Mike is a Vice President of JAG Capital Management (JAG) in St. Louis, Missouri. Since joining JAG in 1980, he has focused on providing portfolio management services to religious institutions. His additional areas of expertise include socially responsible investing, investment policy consultation, expense planning, and construction financing.
